Baby Registry Examples: What a Certified Gift Registry Expert Actually Recommends
Building a baby registry is fun—well, it is at first. But then there comes a point where you see 27 different types of bottles, three versions of the same stroller, and a “must-have” gadget you’ve never heard of. Suddenly, the fun fades away, and the overwhelm takes over.
Here’s something you need to know: you don’t need the perfect registry. You just need a useful one. One that’s built around how you actually plan to raise your baby—not what every parenting influencer told you to buy.
So, let’s break it down, category by category, with real baby registry examples that give you a practical starting point—all vetted by a certified gift registry expert!
Category 1: Sleep Essentials
Sleep is the foundation of your registry. It’s honestly one of the areas where simplicity genuinely wins. And not just because it’s simpler—it’s safer for baby, too.
“Your baby should sleep on their back on a flat surface. Period. No blankets, stuffed animals, bumpers, or other loose objects in the sleeping area. A flat surface means a crib or bassinet with a hard, flat mattress and a fitted crib sheet. That’s it,” says Kristin Revere, MM, CED, NCS, certified birth and postpartum doula, certified gift registry expert, and founder of Gold Coast Doulas.
Simply put, there’s no need to buy all the fancy sleep gadgets on the market—you just need a few staples:
- A crib or bassinet that meets current CPSC safety standards
- A firm, flat mattress with a fitted crib sheet (you’ll want a few, trust us)
- A white noise machine
- Swaddle blankets for the early weeks before transitioning to a sleep sack
- Sleep sacks in multiple sizes (newborn, 0–3 months, 3–6 months)
Category 2: Feeding Gear
Feeding is one of the most personal and unpredictable parts of new parenthood. Your registry should give you flexibility, not lock you into a plan. “Most of us, during pregnancy, decide how we will feed our baby. Do you plan to exclusively breastfeed, exclusively formula feed, exclusively pump, or maybe a mixture of two or three? It’s important to note that goals for feeding often don’t go as planned. Your baby may have a different agenda than you, and that’s OK,” says Kristin.
Here’s a list of feeding gear to add to your registry to keep your plan flexible and realistic:
- A breast pump (check your insurance first—some plans cover this)
- A nursing pillow
- A small variety of bottle styles with different nipples and sizes
- A bottle/pumping parts drying rack
- Nursing pads and nipple cream
Category 3: Diapering Must-Haves
Diapering is one category where you can’t go overboard on the essentials—but you can over-register on one specific brand and regret it later. Here’s what Kristin suggests:
- A changing pad with a waterproof cover (you’ll want multiple covers!)
- Diapers in sizes Newborn AND Size 1—many babies skip Newborn entirely, and Size 1 fits longer
- Fragrance-free wipes
- Diaper pail with refill bags
- Diaper rash cream
Oh, and here’s a pro tip: don’t go all-in on one diaper brand until you know it works for your baby. Add a variety, and let your little one’s rump weigh in—pun intended.
Category 4: Bath Basics
Bath time is genuinely sweet. But it’s also one of the most over-registered categories out there. If you can, keep it simple:
- An infant bathtub
- Fragrance-free baby wash and lotion
- Hooded towels (3 to 5 are plenty)
- Soft washcloths
Category 5: On-the-Go Essentials
This is the part where doing a little research before you register truly pays off the most. Because honestly, baby gear can be super expensive, and on top of that, not all of it is 100% compatible either.
You’ll need:
- A car seat—check compatibility with your specific car model before selecting
- A stroller—travel systems (stroller + infant car seat combo) simplify the click-in-and-go process, but a separate stroller + car seat is fine too
- A baby carrier or wrap that grows with baby
- A well-organized diaper bag (look for one with insulated pockets and easy-clean lining!)
The Stuff Nobody Warns You About
Baby items that sound essential at first but often collect dust are wipe warmers, newborn shoes, elaborate bottle sterilizers, infant mittens, newborn headbands in bulk, crib bumpers (incredibly unsafe), stuffed animals, baby pillows, and bath thermometers.
Also, try not to go overboard with the cutesy newborn-sized clothing. It’s often outgrown fast. That’s why we suggest focusing on the real workhorses: sizes 0–3 and 3–6.
Don’t get us wrong, the nesting instinct is real—and it’s wonderful—but it can also trick you into over-buying before you know what you actually need. “The nesting instinct is an organic way to begin preparing for your new baby. If you slow down, you may enjoy this in-between time even more. Give yourself time to make sure you feel emotionally ready, and don’t distract yourself with all the things you need to do or buy,” says Kristin.
Register for the essentials, wait on the rest, and add items as you discover what your baby and your lifestyle actually call for.
